We the Media

Yes, you saw right. We the Media, which is a play on We the People. A long time ago, there were independent people that created the media. They started newspapers. They created magazines. They got together to put on television shows. It’s a little messier now since corporations through the ages have bought up these independent outlets.

But here is the good news! If they did it back then, we can do it again! We can become We the Media. We can make our own noise! My local town Boulder has the Boulder Weekly as proof. Built from their own high moral standards, they have not been swayed to sell or sell out. The journalism is as brilliant and critical as it used to be back in the day, when journalists were not told what to do and what to say. They are progressive, but if you were to send in a right wing editorial, they do print all viewpoints. I know this, because I have seen it.

When it comes to arts coverage, the corporations (and the current government influence) keep wanting to cut the arts out. We all know this is not smart. The arts are a core part of our being and our society. The influence of the arts can be seen in the local economies, giving a monetary boost, and they make a difference in individual’s lives (and we know the list of benefits go on and on).

So, let’s put together these two points. We can become the media again, and we can cover the arts, which deserve coverage. All it will take is some brave souls to come up with ingenious online or print platforms that work for today’s consumer.

Let the seed of this idea be planted, and please spread the word that you can be part of the solution.

I will say before I close that I am very grateful for the coverage I do get for my clients. There are still some really great people working in the media. I always advocate for PR the audience development way, and it makes a difference!

Thoughts?

Cheers to happy and loyal audiences,
Shoshana

Here here! It’s scary and sad to see what has become of our “news” media, and to see how people in power are trying to smash down the free press to silence dissenting voices trying to call them out on their lies and hypocrisies and even crimes. I hope that we can turn things around soon. I keep telling myself that Trump has caused all this damaging in 18 months, so surely we can reverse it all in the same amount of time with the right people in offices. I sure hope so.

Hi Spike, Thanks again for commenting. I really hope We the People can turn all this around. At the conversation to try is starting. Have a good rest of your weekend, Spike!
