Dance – create your own media for audience building!

Create your own dance media

Tomorrow I will get to part two of how to connect again to build your audiences.  I have not forgotten.  Life has a way of taking you on a different path when something current catches your attention.

Today I was sifting through articles as I do Monday through Friday, and the thought that there is barely any dance articles out there again came to my attention.  This is my second plea to dancers and dance organizations.

I know that dance critics have been cut from many newspapers, and the press releases for the dance world are challenging to get through all the noise for minimal arts real estate in a paper.  The good news is, there are ways to counterbalance these problems.

If you are still desiring more newspaper coverage, your content, program wise and press release wise, could use a fresh angle.  Is the performance benefiting the community in any way?  Is this a new work by a choreographer in your area?  Are you changing a traditional warhorse with updated elements?  These are the type of content that is getting the little dance press that is allotted.

Now, on to the new methods.  When people research on the internet, search engines do not only pull from newspapers.  This is a fact that we tend to forget.  Other content is pulled as well such as websites, blogs, social media, videos, images, etc.  You can get noticed more if you take the initiative to build your own media campaign.

Since the dance world is not getting their share of coverage, I do feel it is time to get busy and create your own coverage!  You no longer have to rely only on newspapers.  You can generate your own world of buzz.

It will take extra time and effort to be consistent with a blog, video campaign, social media program, and website updates.  The time and effort will pay off though!  As long as you are willing to show your full personality to people, I do feel these programs will get the right audiences’ attention.

Also, I am finding that when dance organizations do commit to other media methods, and the content is creative, the newspapers tend to come around as well.

So, the next time you do a search or are on a social media format, think about what is coming up.  Newspapers are only a percentage of the stream.  You can get more attention with these new ways of connecting with your audiences!

Cheers to happy and loyal audiences,
Shoshana

Colleen Tucker

“As an individual fine artist, the Audience Development workshop helped me take a hard look at how to reach people and how to keep them engaged. Performing artists have a built in "paying audience" which may be obvious but for me I have to generate my patrons one at a time. Finding a way to interest people in my art is a full time job; I found helpful tools that I had not considered during the workshop.” —Colleen Tucker, Pastel artist
