Today we had another #auddev chat on Twitter.  This time my co-host was Dave Charest,  Marketing Director/Producer with Astoria Performing Arts Center.  The topic was Theatre and Social Media.  We mentioned best practices for the majority of social media platforms as well as an overall philosophy for using social media to build audiences.  Below is the full conversation.

Cheers to happy and loyal audiences,

@AudienceDevSpec Can you spell out @APACnyc for everyone? #auddevFri Jun 10 16:03:48 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79217208458358784 – #18

@AudienceDevSpec @DaveCharest Can you spell out @APACnyc for everyone? #auddevFri Jun 10 16:04:24 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79217359637856256 – #19

@DaveCharest Sure it’s Astoria Performing Arts Center. We’re just finising up our 10th anniversary season. #auddevFri Jun 10 16:05:38 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79217669869551616 – #20

@AudienceDevSpec Great! So let’s get this party started. What platforms do you currently use for your social media? @DaveCharest #auddevFri Jun 10 16:06:30 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79217884257189888 – #21

@DaveCharest Main ones are blog/website, twitter, facebook, Youtube plus some others. The main thing is the blog/website though. #auddevFri Jun 10 16:09:16 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79218580754939904 – #22

@AudienceDevSpec Interesting, so you consider your website as part of your social media – is this because of the blog? @DaveCharest #auddevFri Jun 10 16:10:07 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79218794693799936 – #23

@DaveCharest All the other tools should work in tandem to eventually bring people to your website. Which I call the Orange Octopus. 🙂 #auddevFri Jun 10 16:10:45 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79218953636937728 – #24

@AudienceDevSpec LOL! The Orange Octopus! It’s orange and it has the arms to…? #auddev@DaveCharestFri Jun 10 16:11:39 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79219183098920961 – #25

@DaveCharest I would say more because of the social nature of linking more than the blog alone. #auddevFri Jun 10 16:11:45 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79219207321038849 – #26

@AudienceDevSpec So let’s start with the blog. Why do you feel this is a main element as opposed to FB or Twitter? #auddevFri Jun 10 16:12:37 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79219426574073857 – #27

@DaveCharest Yep. The arms or the other tools that pull people to the body of the Octopus, or website. #auddevFri Jun 10 16:12:52 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79219489186648064 – #28

@DaveCharest The blog is your intellectual property of which you have full control. FB and Twitter and just tools. #auddevFri Jun 10 16:14:09 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79219813385375744 – #29

@AudienceDevSpec In terms of bringing in new audience, can you mention how you use your blog to do this? #auddevFri Jun 10 16:14:46 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79219967660261376 – #30

@DaveCharest You bring in new audience by creating interesting content that is either educational, helpful or entertaining in some way. #auddevFri Jun 10 16:16:28 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79220395131142144 – #31

@AudienceDevSpec I completely agree. Having content that makes readers want to come back is key. How do you “advertise” the blog in the first place? #auddevFri Jun 10 16:17:40 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79220695254564864 – #32

@DaveCharest People like to share cool stuff. Learn to create cool stuff by listening to your audience. #auddevFri Jun 10 16:17:41 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79220699763453952 – #33

@AudienceDevSpec The blog can be used in several ways, to give to your audience and to let your audience give to you. #auddevFri Jun 10 16:18:25 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79220886099599360 – #34

@DaveCharest You’d like to have people returning to your site multiple times before you’ve ever asked them to buy anything. #auddevFri Jun 10 16:18:38 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79220939455348737 – #35

@hollyhoffman Different conf, same msg RT @DaveCharest: People like to share cool stuff. Learn to create it by listening to yr audience #auddev #neosummitFri Jun 10 16:19:32 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79221167768084480 – #36

@AudienceDevSpec That is a key point. Having them return without any “returns” in mind is a good way to begin to build relationships first. Good #auddevFri Jun 10 16:19:56 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79221265981898752 – #37

@DaveCharest @AudienceDevSpec Yes. There is also a distinction between individual and organization blogs. #auddevFri Jun 10 16:20:03 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79221297242058752 – #38

@AudienceDevSpec For a Theatre group, would you say having an org blog and some indiv blogs by actors/directors is helpful? @DaveCharest #auddevFri Jun 10 16:20:59 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79221530499874816 – #39

@DaveCharest Ideally everyone would blog. People we connect w/ people. Different hangouts equals different points of entry and expanded reach. #auddevFri Jun 10 16:23:29 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79222158101979136 – #40

@AudienceDevSpec I completely agree. The more the merrier, but I guess some protocol would need to be established though? #auddevFri Jun 10 16:24:26 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79222398221684736 – #41

@AudienceDevSpec For more than one person to blog, would be good to make sure the right hand knows what the left hand is doing organizational wise. #auddevFri Jun 10 16:25:46 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79222733975724032 – #42

@DaveCharest It’s situational. But if you’re worried about people doing dumb things, maybe those people shouldn’t be working for you. #auddevFri Jun 10 16:26:24 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79222895280263168 – #43

@AudienceDevSpec Lol! Good point! #auddevFri Jun 10 16:26:40 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79222962980532224 – #44

@AudienceDevSpec The thing about blogs is they are an entry to get people to know you and your org. How can we bump them to the next level? #auddevFri Jun 10 16:27:34 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79223188860575744 – #45

@AudienceDevSpec Can blogging turn into ticket sales and donations? #auddevFri Jun 10 16:28:12 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79223349108150272 – #46

@AudienceDevSpec If you have a question about social media for #arts groups, particularly #theatre, use the #auddevhashtag.Fri Jun 10 16:29:19 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79223627857395712 – #47

@DaveCharest By understanding how the internet really works. It’s about linking and being more places. Guest posting is a great way to extend. #auddevFri Jun 10 16:29:49 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79223754617667584 – #48

@DaveCharest Yes. Although it could have the opposite effect if people don’t like you. 🙂 People want to support those they know, like, trust. #auddevFri Jun 10 16:32:03 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79224317342257153 – #49

@AudienceDevSpec I’m also a big advocate to more outreach, both online and offline. The big question is, can a blog create ROI? #auddevFri Jun 10 16:32:37 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79224457243262977 – #51

@DaveCharest The big thing to understand is that you’re also creating a living archive for your work. This is helpful historically & for grants. #auddevFri Jun 10 16:33:15 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79224617159491584 – #52

@AudienceDevSpec Really good point! MT @DaveCharest: you’re also creating a living archive for your work. This is helpful historically & for grants. #auddevFri Jun 10 16:34:13 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79224862383673344 – #53

@dloehr @DaveCharest It is, in a very real way, telling the “story of your community” more personally, inviting auds into that community. #auddevFri Jun 10 16:41:06 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79226595201646594 – #64

@DaveCharest I also don’t think we could’ve accomplished what we did w/ HC without starting the ground work for it 3 shows earlier. #auddevFri Jun 10 16:41:58 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79226812139438081 – #65

@AudienceDevSpec Yes, and a blog can allow the audience to know your personality, you more personally too. @dloehr @DaveCharest #auddevFri Jun 10 16:42:00 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79226821266247681 – #66

@AudienceDevSpec Social media is a way to get the word out, but it is part of the invitations you send out. Old fashioned rule – invite 3X goal. #auddevFri Jun 10 16:48:51 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79228545582379008 – #77

@DaveCharest FB events for theater have been useful to keep the chatter going. You can tag the event in status updates so people know about it. #auddevFri Jun 10 16:49:21 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79228669863788544 – #78

@RbClassical @davecharest that’s funny since FB was originally for college only. #auddevFri Jun 10 17:06:01 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79232862251008000 – #110

@ArtsAtICC @DaveCharest Just saw @alyankovic in concert Sunday. 🙂 I still owe @AudienceDevSpec a picture from that. #auddevFri Jun 10 17:06:03 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79232873151987712 – #111

@AudienceDevSpec I am starting to see more trailers for live theater events as well as livestream and YouTubes after the fact. #auddevFri Jun 10 17:06:20 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79232945738625024 – #112

@DaveCharest 1st there are many union rules that get in the way. Then there’s the trap of presenting too much like a movie. give wrong impress. #auddevFri Jun 10 17:06:21 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79232947890290688 – #113

@ArtsAtICC @EchoSiedel Agreed…but tell that to the bean counters worried about putting people in the seats. #auddevFri Jun 10 17:06:56 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79233096117002240 – #114

@AudienceDevSpec .@DaveCharest Give the wrong impression is my one concern with video. #auddevFri Jun 10 17:07:10 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79233155030200320 – #115

@DaveCharest @RbClassical I know! But when you think about the people you connect with there it’s all people you know. #auddevFri Jun 10 17:07:51 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79233325742567424 – #116

@ArtsAtICC @DaveCharest How is the video used? Via YouTube? Aren’t there copyright issues? #auddevFri Jun 10 17:08:24 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79233465802948608 – #117

@DaveCharest I’m not a fan of live streaming theater. UNLESS can be filmed correctly. #auddevFri Jun 10 17:08:50 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79233574536089600 – #118

@AudienceDevSpec @DaveCharest @RbClassical I think it is good and bad. Knowing the people already isn’t a bad thing and can be good in terms of #auddev.Fri Jun 10 17:08:54 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79233588750589953 – #119

@DaveCharest I lean towards creating videos that entice people to see the show. #auddevFri Jun 10 17:09:30 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79233742010462208 – #120

@AudienceDevSpec Do you feel the interview approach for introducing a play is better? @DaveCharest #auddevFri Jun 10 17:09:47 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79233812730617856 – #121

@ArtsAtICC Not to switch gears, but does anyone have any tips on marketing to 70+ year olds? #auddevFri Jun 10 17:10:25 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79233970394497025 – #122

@ArtsAtICC Our season ticket holders avg age is 70+, and we seem to have problems attracting a younger audience. #auddevFri Jun 10 17:11:23 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79234214444273664 – #123

@DaveCharest I like it best. But it’s about finding the drama in whatever way you decide to go. The pieces need to stand on their own. #auddevFri Jun 10 17:11:34 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79234259520454657 – #124

@AudienceDevSpec Personal approach is always best. Taking the time to talk with them. @ArtsAtICC #auddevFri Jun 10 17:11:45 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79234308870651904 – #125

@ArtsAtICC Our 70+’s don’t seem to be avid social media users…occasionally Facebook, occasionally email, but that’s it. #auddevFri Jun 10 17:12:16 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79234438554333186 – #126

@AudienceDevSpec @ArtsAtICC That is surprising for a community college. The shows do not attract the students? #auddevFri Jun 10 17:12:35 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79234517654700032 – #128

@AudienceDevSpec @ArtsAtICC I would find out what the younger generation wants in the first place. #auddevFri Jun 10 17:13:29 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79234741026553856 – #129

@ArtsAtICC @AudienceDevSpec Agreed. And generally I’m trying to do that. Several other issues influence the effectiveness, however. #auddevFri Jun 10 17:13:49 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79234828444254208 – #130

@AudienceDevSpec To summarize, social media is best used as part of the bigger picture of spreading the word. #auddevFri Jun 10 17:15:07 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79235154790449152 – #131

@AudienceDevSpec Each social media platform offers something different you can use, but don’t rely too heavily on one or the other. #auddevFri Jun 10 17:15:34 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79235266598010880 – #133

@RbClassical @artsaticc that’s where social media can help (in regards to reaching younger audiences). Reach out to them where they are. #auddevFri Jun 10 17:15:55 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79235354229612545 – #134

@DaveCharest @ArtsAtICC Sounds like you need to lay groundwork so all powers on the same page. Nothing kills effectiveness more than opinions. #auddevFri Jun 10 17:18:18 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79235956963680257 – #140

@ArtsAtICC @RbClassical We’re getting there; still trying to make people aware of our Facebook/Twitter/YouTube presences. #auddevFri Jun 10 17:19:10 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79236172659961856 – #141

@ArtsAtICC @AudienceDevSpec I intend on blogging more for 11-12, but I need to find topics so we don’t just make our blog another sales pitch #auddevFri Jun 10 17:20:31 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79236514567045122 – #143

@ArtsAtICC @AudienceDevSpec Again, that’s my plan. Cultural mindset has to be there too. If team isn’t all on the same page, that’s not good. #auddevFri Jun 10 17:24:21 +0000 2011 – tweet id 79237479105957888 – #148

Testimonials

Carol Olson

“Working with Shoshana was the next right step for our 76 year old community chorus. She directed the organization to be patron centered and to view all patron interactions from their perspective. We experienced a 71% increase in audiences last season. That’s because we have a new viewpoint: from the outside in, instead of the inside out. It’s a continuous process, but we have experienced exciting results! Thanks Shoshana!” —Carol Olson, Executive Director of VOCI (Voices of Canton, Inc.)
