Points of entry for audience building

It’s been a while since I have read an article about entry points.  I think it is a concept that would be good to revisit every season during your planning stages. Just as a quick reminder, here are some questions to consider while figuring out entry points (programs to get people connected to you at the beginning):

  • Who are the audiences you are trying to attract?
  • Where do your audiences live (online and offline)?
  • What types of entry points are each segment of audiences attracted to?
  • What entry points are you able and willing to do (online and offline)?
  • What entry points do you enjoy doing?
  • What will you do to follow up after the entry point occurs?
  • What entry points have worked in the past and which ones do you need to scrap?

Now consider how lucky we are to have many more entry points than we have had in the past!

  • Community outreach options
  • Live broadcasts: YouTube, Facebook, Livestream
  • Social Media in general
  • Webinars
  • Collaborations with other organizations and artists
  • Possible showcase opportunities
  • Special discounts and coupons
  • Bring a friend programs
  • Pop up, Mash up, Flash Mobs
  • Blogs and other online content

The possibilities within each scenario are as endless as your creativity can take you!

Now match up the first list with the second list, and if you really know your audiences well, you will be able to conduct several points for each audience segment for even better results of getting people connected with you.

The summer is coming, and this is a planning time for many organizations. So do let this be a friendly reminder that entry points, and what you do before and after, still matters.

Cheers to happy and loyal audiences,
Shoshana

Colleen Tucker

“As an individual fine artist, the Audience Development workshop helped me take a hard look at how to reach people and how to keep them engaged. Performing artists have a built in "paying audience" which may be obvious but for me I have to generate my patrons one at a time. Finding a way to interest people in my art is a full time job; I found helpful tools that I had not considered during the workshop.” —Colleen Tucker, Pastel artist
